WEEKLY IN DEPTH...

Note: this Napster info will remain here for the entire week.

How Napster Works

Napster (http://www.napster.com) has exploded into the hot application that's captured the hearts and minds of every vaguely cool twentysomething (and their friends, and their coworkers, and their significant others) with a Net connection. The company claims some 40 million users. Now, Napster may be fighting for its life against a court-ordered shutdown, but Napsterites say they'll find a way to share and download online music no matter what.

At the heart of the Napster storm is its application: the music file-sharing program lets you convert your desktop into a Web-based trading room where millions of music fans swap MP3 digital music files.

The principle is simple. Napster makes your PC into a Web server, from which you can upload and download music files. Everyone with Napster can raid your music collection and you can pick through theirs. For free.

The design and application is also elegant in its simplicity. You download Napster as you would any application, walk through the nearly automatic installation, and start.

Being part of the Napster community is like being in a giant record store with an inventory that changes every minute. You never know what you'll find. That's a big part of what's become an addiction for many. Try it, you'll like it!
