Did you know that...

... 68% of Americans who view computer commercials on TV that advertise a processor, such as the Pentium III, believe it speeds up your internet connections. However, in fact, it's a modem that does that.

Spider

A program that automatically fetches Web pages. Spiders are used to feed pages to search engines. It's called a spider because it crawls over the Web. Another term for these programs is webcrawler.

Because most Web pages contain links to other pages, a spider can start almost anywhere. As soon as it sees a link to another page, it goes off and fetches it. Large search engines, like Alta Vista, have many spiders working in parallel.

READER FEEDBACK...

A reader asks...

"WOW! That Karaoke Player is great. Thanks.  Any advice on how to use it?"

You're very welcome.

After downloading and installing the Karaoke Player, create a new folder on your Windows Desktop, (right-click on desktop >> new >> folder).  Then rename the folder to MUSIC (right-click on folder >> rename >> MUSIC).  You'll save all of your music to this folder.

Each day you can right-click on the Daily Karaoke Tune and save it to your MUSIC folder.  When your friends drop by, open the Music Folder and double-click on the tune you want to hear.  As the music plays and the words appear on the screen have a blast with your friends at your KARAOKE PARTY.

If you have an old microphone with a mini-plug on it (one that is not too sensitive so as to avoid squealing feedback), plug it into the jack on your sound card where it says MIC.  To turn on the amplification for the microphone, double-click the little speaker in the lower right hand corner of your screen and uncheck the MUTE box for the microphone.  Close the audio settings (play control) window.  Now, when you sing, your voice will be amplified thru your speakers.

If you don't have a microphone, run down to K-Mart or Radio Shack and buy one.  Ask for a KARAOKE microphone (uni-directional, no squealing feedback) with a mini-plug connector on the end of the wire (for your computer sound card).  It should cost 10 or 15 dollars.  It's worth it.

If you have any problems with any of the above instructions, send me an email explaining the problem.  I'll try to help you out.

Have Fun!!!

WEEKLY IN DEPTH...

Security or Invasion of Privacy?

Officials used video surveillance to scan images of fans as they passed through turnstiles to watch the Super Bowl last weekend.

Thousands of football fans were subjected to a "computerized police lineup" at America's biggest sporting event last weekend, as police used cutting-edge technology to scan the crowd for pickpockets and terrorists.

Like surveillance cameras in convenience stores, at cash-dispensing machines, ATMs, or on street corners, the cameras installed for the Super Bowl game between the Baltimore Ravens and the New York Giants captured images of people in a public place.

But unlike most video surveillance systems, which store the images on tape, the cameras were connected by cable to computers that scanned the images, instantly dissecting facial features and comparing them to a digital database of known criminals and terrorists.

Signs outside the stadium warned fans that they were under video surveillance, police said.

The video system, which uses biometric technology to compare facial features such as the size of a nose, the set of a brow, or the cut of a jaw, was offered to the Tampa Police Department by Graphco Technologies, a Pennsylvania-based database and "knowledge management" firm.

The test project compared images from the video cameras to a relatively small database of about 1,700 faces -- including crooks ranging from pickpockets to domestic terrorists -- assembled from FBI and police files.

Future uses would hopefully include larger databases of tens of thousands of criminals.
