NIC

NIC is an acronym for Network Interface Card, an electronic circut board that plugs into your computer's motherboard.

As its name implies, a NIC allows your computer to connect to a computer network (a collection of computers).

All high speed Internet access services (DSL, CABLE) require a NIC in order to function because you are physically connecting to their computer network.

One of the largest brand names for NICs is 3COM.  The company name is derived from the prefixes of three terms -- computer, communication, and compatibility.

READER FEEDBACK...

A reader asks...

Q.   "Found the Archives! Wonderful. Just what I've always wanted... especially since I haven't been able to sit down & read my mail for a  while.  Now if I miss a day I can go to the Archives to see the missed day"

A.   Good job!  I'll be sending your software prize in a few days.  The contest is still on.  Search this webpage for a secret graphic link that takes you to the new ARCHIVES and win a software prize.

ON THE LIGHTER SIDE...

WEEKLY IN DEPTH...

Note: the following computer info will remain here for the entire week.

Disk Defragmenting

A fragmented hard disk can slow your computer's performance significantly.  If you notice that your programs take a little longer to run, file fragmentation may be one reason for it.

When a computer's operating system has to save a file to the hard disk, if it cannot find a large enough space to store the whole file, it can store it in smaller pieces, called fragments.  Unfortunately, Windows sometimes uses fragments even when it's not necessary. Programs that use these files can't tell the difference between a whole file and a fragmented one, but accessing fragments takes a small amount of extra time.

A disk that contains a lot of fragmented files with a lot of small pieces of free space between files is called a fragmented disk.  Windows has a tool that defragments your hard drive, that is, it rewrites all of the information existing on your hard drive in such a way that all files are put back together again... sort of like Humpty Dumpty.

Just go to START >> PROGRAMS >>  ACCESSORIES  >> SYSTEM TOOLS  >> and choose  DISK DEFRAGMENTER.

Follow the simple instructions as the Defrag prompts you.  Then go watch some TV as it does its job.

The process might take several hours.  After it's completed, you'll have a hard drive that has all of its files neatly arranged for efficient and quick access.
