READER FEEDBACK...
A reader asks...
Q. "I read your "Weekly In Depth" feature about defragmenting. Does my computer do that automatically or do I follow your instructions?"
A. Although there are many functions such as defragmenting that can be scheduled to operate automatically, I suggest that you manually run the defrag process every month or two by following the steps that I have outlined. And here's an interesting post script... if you notice that your computer is running alot slower than it used to run, you might try reinstalling your Windows Operating System. Make sure that you reinstall into the same place (folder) that currently holds your Windows. All settings and programs will be carried over and you'll have a nice, new, clean Windows.

WEEKLY IN DEPTH...
Note: the following computer info will remain here for the entire week.
Disk Defragmenting
A fragmented hard disk can slow your computer's performance significantly. If you notice that your programs take a little longer to run, file fragmentation may be one reason for it.
When a computer's operating system has to save a file to the hard disk, if it cannot find a large enough space to store the whole file, it can store it in smaller pieces, called fragments. Unfortunately, Windows sometimes uses fragments even when it's not necessary. Programs that use these files can't tell the difference between a whole file and a fragmented one, but accessing fragments takes a small amount of extra time.
A disk that contains a lot of fragmented files with a lot of small pieces of free space between files is called a fragmented disk. Windows has a tool that defragments your hard drive, that is, it rewrites all of the information existing on your hard drive in such a way that all files are put back together again... sort of like Humpty Dumpty.
Just go to START >> PROGRAMS >> ACCESSORIES >> SYSTEM TOOLS >> and choose DISK DEFRAGMENTER.
Follow the simple instructions as the Defrag prompts you. Then go watch some TV as it does its job.
The process might take several hours. After it's completed, you'll have a hard drive that has all of its files neatly arranged for efficient and quick access.
