Did you know that...

...a "jiffy" is an actual unit of time for 1/100th of a second. Thus the saying, "I will be there in a jiffy".

Nanosecond

A billionth of a second. Many computer operations, such as the speed of memory chips, are measured in nanoseconds. Nanosecond is often abbreviated as ns.

READER FEEDBACK...

A reader asks...

Q.   "Is there a program that will automatically synchronize my computer's clock with the official government time?"

A.   There are many programs that will do that. Some are free and some are shareware (try it out for a while and then buy it if you like it).

I like the program called Speaking Clock. It does alot of things. It will not only synchronize your computer with official government time but it will also announce the time every hour, act as an alarm clock to wake you up in the morning, etc.

The file is about 1 MB in size and will take a few minutes to download. After clicking on the link below, the file will be saved to your hard drive. If a window pops up asking you what you want to do with this file, just choose SAVE TO DISK. After the download is finished, go to where you saved it and double click on it to install it on your computer. It's a great little program. Enjoy!

Click on the following link if you want to download the Speaking Clock program... SPKCLK.EXE

WEEKLY IN DEPTH...

Note: the following computer info will remain here for the entire week.

Disk Defragmenting

A fragmented hard disk can slow your computer's performance significantly.  If you notice that your programs take a little longer to run, file fragmentation may be one reason for it.

When a computer's operating system has to save a file to the hard disk, if it cannot find a large enough space to store the whole file, it can store it in smaller pieces, called fragments.  Unfortunately, Windows sometimes uses fragments even when it's not necessary. Programs that use these files can't tell the difference between a whole file and a fragmented one, but accessing fragments takes a small amount of extra time.

A disk that contains a lot of fragmented files with a lot of small pieces of free space between files is called a fragmented disk.  Windows has a tool that defragments your hard drive, that is, it rewrites all of the information existing on your hard drive in such a way that all files are put back together again... sort of like Humpty Dumpty.

Just go to START >> PROGRAMS >>  ACCESSORIES  >> SYSTEM TOOLS  >> and choose  DISK DEFRAGMENTER.

Follow the simple instructions as the Defrag prompts you.  Then go watch some TV as it does its job.

The process might take several hours.  After it's completed, you'll have a hard drive that has all of its files neatly arranged for efficient and quick access.
