POTS

Short for "plain old telephone service", which refers to the standard telephone service that most homes use.

In contrast, telephone services based on high-speed, digital communications lines, are not-POTS. The main distinctions between POTS and non-POTS services are speed and bandwidth.

POTS is generally restricted to about 52 Kbps (52,000 bits per second).

Most people use "Plain Old Telephone Service" to access the Internet with their 56K modem.

A.    Many Thanks.  It's really a great site and I am using it for TODAY'S SITE above.  You can zoom into any area of New York City and then switch the map to an actual photograph.  I urge everybody to go see what their neighborhood looks like from up in the air.  Go check it out at...

COMPUTER NEWS BRIEF...

NAPSTER DOWNLOADING HEAVY DESPITE FILE BLOCKING

LOS ANGELES (April 5, 2001) (Reuters) - The hugely popular song-swapping service Napster saw traffic surge in the last week of March, even as the Internet site scrambled to block trade in copyrighted material, a study said Wednesday.

The number of downloads on the Napster system spiked to 593 million songs in the last week of March, up more than 25 percent from the previous week, according to Webnoize, a Cambridge, Mass.-based company that follows online entertainment.

The evidence that consumers are downloading more songs through the restricted service comes amid a continued skirmishing between Napster and the recording industry over whether the service has done enough to comply with the landmark court order that it stop trading copyrighted material.

"Users are taking the file-blocking filter in their stride," Webnoize said. "Millions of users continue to use Napster to access huge amounts of free music."

The Recording Industry Association of America said in a late March filing with the U.S. District Court in San Francisco that it believed Napster was not complying with the March 5 injunction against it.

Napster responding by saying it had blocked more than 275,000 songs from being downloaded by the end of the month, but that the recording industry had not provided enough information to allow it to comply fully with  the court order.

Napster said then that major recording companies had not provided it with any variants of any song names, which would allow it to set up more efficient filters to block those copyright-protected tracks. Napster said that 30 percent of its staff was working on aspects of complying with the court order against it in March.

Neither Napster nor the RIAA were immediately available for comment Wednesday.

On a monthly basis, Napster site traffic peaked in January when nearly 3 billion songs were downloaded, according to Webnoize data. That tally slipped to 2.79 billion in February and 2.49 billion in March.

WEEKLY IN DEPTH...

Note: the following computer info will remain here for the entire week.

A Glossary of Internet Terms

In this week's "WEEKLY IN DEPTH", let's review some common Internet Terms...

Browser
The piece of software that you need to see the web. It translates web files into text, images, sound video, etc, that we humans can understand. Two of the most popular browser brand names are Internet Explorer and  Netscape Navigator.

Cursor
The I-beam that flashes in your active application. You place your cursor by moving your mouse, and then clicking once. The cursor is the place where what you type will go. Note that, when you are looking at a web page, your mouse pointer changes from an arrow (picture) to an I-bar (text) to a hand (link) as you move around the web page

Download
To transfer electronic files from a server to your computer. Transfer time depends on the size of the files and the speed of your modem.  Technically, every time you go to a website you are "downloading" that website to your computer screen.  This term is more often associated with the downloading of pictures, sounds and word processing documents to your computer from another computer.

Hypertext
Also called Linked Text. You can click on Hypertext to go to another page or website.

Icon
In reference to the web and computers, an icon is any, usually small, image that you can click on.

Modem
Modulator/Demodulator. There, now you know where the word comes from. A modem (emphasis on the first syllable; "mowed'em") is the piece of equipment that allows your computer to connect to phone lines, in order to go online.

Online
You are online when your computer is linked, via a modem and phone lines, to a server.

Server
A server is a computer that's got the right software to process your requests for files or web pages. If getting a file or web page takes a long time, it could be due to a busy server, especially if you're on a popular site.

Surfing
A productive activity or a big waste of time, depending on what sites you're visiting. Surfing is the slang for browsing the World Wide Web. (ie what you're doing now)

Upload
To transfer electronic files from your computer to a server. Transfer time depends on the size of the files and the speed of your modem. When you "attach" a picture file to an email, you are "uploading" that file.
