Today's The name comes from the fact that computers contain many types of electronic "chips" which are typically less than ¼ square inch and can contain millions of electronic components (transistors). These computer chips are produced using a material called SILICON.

WINDOWS XP STARTS BETA TESTING
Washington
Post (April 8, 2001) - Where does Microsoft want you to go this fall?
The destination it has in mind is Windows XP, the long-awaited fusion of its home and professional
operating systems. And this latest version of Windows has started its beta
testing.
While Windows 95, 98 and Millennium Edition have worked with most hardware and software, their compatibility has come at the cost of reliability; by contrast, Windows NT and 2000, designed for workstations and servers (business computer systems), are immensely sturdier but also harder to use.
XP (short for "experience") aims to combine the best of both branches of the family tree. Whatever else Microsoft says, XP's real draw is that it promises to end the Windows death march of crashes, freezes and hangs.
You'll will pay a steep price in terms of hardware requirements for Windows XP. The current recommended minimum -- a 300-MHz Pentium II, 128 megaybtes of memory and a 4-gig hard drive -- seems wildly optimistic. On a machine with those figures, XP staggered pitiably. Microsoft itself suggests that the best upgrade experience will be to buy a new machine with XP preinstalled.
Maybe where Microsoft wants us to go is to the computer store.
