DRIVER

A program that controls a device. Every device, whether it be a printer, disk drive, or keyboard, must have a driver program.

Many drivers, such as the keyboard driver, come with the operating system. For other devices, you may need to load a new driver when you connect the device to your computer.

A driver acts like a translator between the device and programs that use the device. Each device has its own set of specialized commands that only its driver knows.

Normally, device driver software comes with the device when you buy it.  Additionally, Windows has many device drivers built into its software.

READER FEEDBACK...

A reader asks...

Q.    "I have much difficulty reading small blue or red or brown on black.  Best is  white on black."

A.    Thanks for your feedback.  I have both a large and very clear monitor and DSL high speed access and I sometimes forget that many others do not have that clarity and speed.  So, every now and then you gotta remind me.

Let's compromise.  I'll make all of the very small print (such as the Index Links at the top of the page) white on the black background.  I'll leave the [return to top] links ( that look like this [return to top] ) just the way they are (to conserve space and avoid distraction).  I hope that this will do the trick for you.

COMPUTER NEWS BRIEF...

ACLU: 'Massive' Government Cyber-Snooping

privacyadsm.jpg (27471 bytes)

NewsBytes (April 10, 2001) - The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) is launching a print and Internet advertising campaign that warns of "massive" government monitoring efforts.

In a full-page ad set to debut later this month in issues of The New Yorker and The New York Times Magazine, the ACLU warns that government e-surveillance programs are encroaching on Fourth Amendment protections against "unwarranted government surveillance."

Specifically, the ACLU wants Congress and the Justice Department to turn up the heat on the FBI for its use of the controversial e-mail surveillance device, "Carnivore."

The ACLU said today that they hope that the ads will re-spark the national debate over government surveillance efforts, prompting Congress, in turn, to move the issue to the top of its agenda.

Check out the ACLU site at www.aclu.org
