Today's An error that can appear on computers running in a Windows environment. This includes even the earliest versions of Windows and still occurs in later versions such as Microsoft Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT, and Windows 2000. Jokingly called the blue screen of death because when the error occurs, the screen turns blue, and the computer almost always freezes and requires rebooting.

A reader asks...
Q. "In the old days there was 'short wave radio' on which you could hear foreign newscast. I am told that you can now hear such broadcasts on the Internet. How can I do this?"
A. You've picked a very interesting subject. Next week I'll use the WEEKLY IN DEPTH area to explore this subject. You'll find it very interesting to be able to listen to live boradcasts from all over the world. Stay tuned.

Web Site Honors Chinese Pilot
(Editor's Note: Earlier today, there existed a link to the Chinese site mentioned in this article. The link has been removed because of the crude language and disgusting photos that some Americans have posted in the site's guest book.)
BEIJING (April 16, 2001) - China's official news agency has set up a memorial Web site for a pilot missing since an April 1 collision with a U.S. spy plane. The site lets visitors offer online versions of traditional Chinese funerary gifts of wine, flowers or songs.
The Web site is part of a campaign to put pilot Wang Wei's death to patriotic use. Wang's hometown held a weekend rally to celebrate the heroism of the pilot, who has been declared a "revolutionary martyr," and the army and paramilitary police vowed to make him their role model.
The Chinese military called off its search for Wang on Saturday, 13 days after the collision with the U.S. spy plane. China held the 24-member spy plane crew for more than 11 days after their emergency landing on the island of Hainan, and some Chinese have expressed anger that the crew was eventually released.
WEEKLY IN DEPTH...
Note: the following computer info will remain here for the entire week.
SPAM
Yes, there are legitimate and effective ways to do commerce on the web. SPAM is not one of them.
SPAM is U.C.E. (pronounced ucky) Unsolicited Commercial Email -- or, for that matter unsolicited bulk email of any sort.
There are companies that send millions and millions of pieces of the same "get rich quick" and other "be a sucker" promotions through email.
Fight SPAM. Here are some rules to follow...
DO NOT reply to SPAM asking to be removed. Many SPAM
emails have instructions on how to be removed from the list. If you respond to these
instructions they have a "verified" address -- an address that is known to go to a
real email account. So, current thinking has it that you will end up on more SPAM
lists rather than being removed. So don't bother. Besides more often than not the
address is not a valid address.
DO report spam to the appropriate ISP. It will take some looking to uncover who
the spammer's ISP is. This info is held in the "email-header". Once you find the
proper ISP report the spammer. If no one reports then the ISP can't do anything to
help. Forward the SPAM to your own ISP (Internet Service Provider) with a
request that the ISP try to filter such email.
DO NOT under any circumstance buy any product or use any service that you
learn about through SPAM. If SPAM was not effective they would stop doing it. And at the moment it is only
marginally effective. If only a few more of us make efforts to be a little less gullible the SPAM market might fall apart.
DO reward those merchants and commerce-type folks who practice nice marketing. Give them a tiny bit more of your attention and a benefit of the doubt.
