Dial-up
Access

Refers to connecting a device to a network via a modem and a normal telephone line.

Dial-up access is really just like a regular phone connection, except that the parties at the two ends are computer devices rather than people.

Because dial-up access uses normal telephone lines, the quality of the connection is not always good and data rates are limited.

In the past, the maximum data rate with dial-up access was 56 Kbps (56,000 bits per second), but new high speed technologies such as DSL and CABLE offer connection speeds from 10 to 50 times faster than a 56K modem.

READER FEEDBACK...

A reader asks...

Q.    "Regarding the Mental Health website links that appeared on ComputerGuyNY Report, are you recommending these mental health resources?"

A.    I know only what the accompanying news brief says about these sites.  I visit the web sites that I post on ComputerGuyNY Report but I'm not qualified to recommend the services that they offer.  That's a decision that you must come to based upon your visit to each site.

I see my job as bringing to the attention of my readers what exists on the Web.  It is each individual's responsibility to determine the quality of the information and services being offered.

Is it better not to know that these services exist?  My opinion is that we should be "Internet literate" despite the fact that there are scams on Ebay, despite the pornography solicitations that will arrive in our email, despite the fact that some vendors will rip us off, despite the fact that people whom we meet in chat rooms are often not what they pretend to be.

The alternative is to reject this new technology and retreat to our telephones, televisions and snail mail.  The bottom line is... learn about what is out there and then approach it as you would approach an offer from a company trying to sell aluminum siding to you.

COMPUTER NEWS BRIEF...

Cheney: No Net Taxes

Reuters  (April 19, 2001) - Vice President Dick Cheney said today that the United States should make permanent current policies that ban Internet access taxes and extend a moratorium on Internet sales taxes.

Speaking before high-tech business leaders in suburban Virginia, Cheney said Bush administration policies would help the recovery of an industry facing uncertain economic prospects.

The current bans on both the Internet access taxes and the Internet sales taxes are scheduled to expire in October of this year.

WEEKLY IN DEPTH...

Note: the following computer info will remain here for the entire week.

SPAM

Yes, there are legitimate and effective ways to do commerce on the web. SPAM is not one of them.

SPAM is U.C.E. (pronounced ucky) Unsolicited Commercial Email -- or, for that matter unsolicited bulk email of any sort.

There are companies that send millions and millions of pieces of the same "get rich quick" and other "be a sucker" promotions through email.

Fight SPAM.  Here are some rules to follow...

DO NOT reply to SPAM asking to be removed. Many SPAM emails have instructions on how to be removed from the list. If you respond to these instructions they have a "verified" address -- an address that is known to go to a real email account. So, current thinking has it that you will end up on more SPAM lists rather than being removed. So don't bother. Besides more often than not the address is not a valid address.

DO report spam to the appropriate ISP. It will take some looking to uncover who the spammer's ISP is. This info is held in the "email-header". Once you find the proper ISP report the spammer. If no one reports then the ISP can't do anything to help. Forward the SPAM to your own ISP (Internet Service Provider) with a request that the ISP try to filter such email.

DO NOT under any circumstance buy any product or use any service that you learn about through SPAM. If SPAM was not effective they would stop doing it. And at the moment it is only marginally effective. If only a few more of us make efforts to be a little less gullible the SPAM market might fall apart.

DO reward those merchants and commerce-type folks who practice nice marketing. Give them a tiny bit more of your attention and a benefit of the doubt.
