Bluetooth

With all the talk about  handheld devices, you might have heard the word "Bluetooth".

Bluetooth is a specification set up by the computer industry to allow PDAs (personal digital assistants), mobile phones, and personal computers to talk with one another through a wireless connection.

With this type of technology, you are able to to simply press a button on a digital device and have information transmitted (without wires) to a second device.

How about having your refrigerator sending a food shopping list to your PDA or your digital camera sending your photos to your computer?  And that's just the beginning.

In the future, as I meet you and shake your hand, the digital equivalent of your business card will automatically be transmitted to my Personal Digital Assistant.

Many similar technologies currently exist.  And they're going to get better and better.

READER FEEDBACK...

A reader asks...

Q.    "I need info on the plays of William Shakesphere for school.  Any suggestions?"

A.    A good place to start is...

The Complete Works of William Shakespeare

You'll find the text of all of his plays here as well as some good links to web resources about his life.

COMPUTER NEWS BRIEF...

Napster Licenses Acoustic Fingerprinting Tech

Redwood City, California  (April 22, 2001) - Embattled song-swap company Napster says that it has licensed acoustic fingerprinting technology to help filter songs in compliance with an injunction.

Relatable Corporation of Alexandria, Virginia has developed a technology that identifies music based on the recordings themselves and analyzes the acoustical properties of a recording's waveform to identify it precisely, regardless of its audio format, bit rate or minor signal distortion, the companies said.

Napster's service has attracted about 60 million users who swap songs for free by trading MP3 files, a compression format that turns music on compact discs into small digital files.

Napster said it hopes to incorporate the technology into its current file screening system and into a new membership service it hopes to launch this summer.

WEEKLY IN DEPTH...

Note: the following computer info will remain here for the entire week.

INTERNET RADIO

Internet radio broadcasting covers everything from a 12 year old "transmitting" his own radio program via his personal computer to the largest worldwide commercial radio networks.

"Live" and taped broadcasts from the farthest corners of the globe in almost every language are available at the click of a mouse.  Want news?  Want 50's music? Want discussion?  You name the language, the type (genre), the country.

Although there are many free services that allow you to choose the kind of radio that you want to hear, the easiest place to start is with the built in radio tuner that comes with REALPLAYER.

The audio (and video) "streaming" programming technology called REALPLAYER usually is automatically installed in modern computers.  Don't know if you have it installed?  No problem... just click HERE to go to the REALPLAYER RADIO site and then try to listen to some streaming audio/video.  If you don't have RealPlayer installed, it'll tell you.

If you don't have it installed, you can get the free version of this software (RealPlayer 8 Basic) HERE at the REALPLAYER DOWNLOAD PAGE.

All set to listen to radio from around the world?  OK.  Go to the REALPLAYER RADIO TUNER page and then choose the type (genre) or language or city or country that you want to listen to.

Don't get upset if some of the stations are not available.  Just try a different station.

Of course, the faster your computer and connection speed, the better your reception will be.

And don't forget to send us an email about the good stations that you've found.  I'll share your info with the rest of our readers.
