Username

The name a person uses to identify himself or herself when logging onto a computer system or online service.

Both a username (user ID) and a password are required.

In an Internet e-mail address, the username is the left part before the @ sign. For example, MYNAME is the username in myname@xyz.com.

America Online calls a username a "screen name."

It's a good idea to have two usernames and passwords... an "important" username and password that is used for important things such as Internet signon, email, etc. and a "garbage" username and password that you can use to register with the many free web services.

If you consistently use your "garbage" username and password for all of those web service, you'll always know what to type when you return to any of those services many months or years later.

COMPUTER NEWS BRIEF...

Ellis Island Web Site Overwhelmed

Associated Press (April 27, 2001) -  People searching for information about their ancestral roots have overwhelmed a new Ellis Island Web site that debuted last week.

The site had 26 million visitors in its first 54 hours of operation, and many more were unable to get into the site because of its popularity, said Peg Zitko, a spokeswoman for the Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation, Inc.  "The response has just been tremendous," Zitko said.

The site, which went online April 18, includes arrival records of 22 million immigrants who entered the port of New York between 1892 to 1924.  "In the first six hours we had 8 million visitors." Zitko said. "Right then we knew we had an instant hit."

Figures for this week were not available, Zitko said Wednesday.  The largest number of inquiries have come from the United States but there's also been a significant number from other countries, she said.  "We knew it would be popular because 40 percent of Americans can trace their roots back to someone who entered the country at Ellis Island," Zitko said, "but we didn't expect it to be an international phenomenon."

The site began operating with 10 servers and three backups and had to add 10 more to handle the load.  Zitko said it was the top search term on the Lycos search engine last week, and only the third time in Lycos' history that a new term debuted as No. 1.

Editor's Note:  You can try your luck and see if you can get into the website at...

WEEKLY IN DEPTH...

Note: the following computer info will remain here for the entire week.

INTERNET RADIO

Internet radio broadcasting covers everything from a 12 year old "transmitting" his own radio program via his personal computer to the largest worldwide commercial radio networks.

"Live" and taped broadcasts from the farthest corners of the globe in almost every language are available at the click of a mouse.  Want news?  Want 50's music? Want discussion?  You name the language, the type (genre), the country.

Although there are many free services that allow you to choose the kind of radio that you want to hear, the easiest place to start is with the built in radio tuner that comes with REALPLAYER.

The audio (and video) "streaming" programming technology called REALPLAYER usually is automatically installed in modern computers.  Don't know if you have it installed?  No problem... just click HERE to go to the REALPLAYER RADIO site and then try to listen to some streaming audio/video.  If you don't have RealPlayer installed, it'll tell you.

If you don't have it installed, you can get the free version of this software (RealPlayer 8 Basic) HERE at the REALPLAYER DOWNLOAD PAGE.

All set to listen to radio from around the world?  OK.  Go to the REALPLAYER RADIO TUNER page and then choose the type (genre) or language or city or country that you want to listen to.

Don't get upset if some of the stations are not available.  Just try a different station.

Of course, the faster your computer and connection speed, the better your reception will be.

And don't forget to send us an email about the good stations that you've found.  I'll share your info with the rest of our readers.
