Today's Refers to any graphics device or software that uses at least 24 bits to represent each dot or pixel. Using 24 bits means that more than 16 million unique colors can be represented. Since humans can only distinguish a few million colors, this is more than enough to accurately represent any color image. Suffice it to say that "24 bit" color is more than satisfactory when creating or viewing or printing photos. |

A reader asks...
Q. "Regarding yesterday's website about restaurant inspection in NYC, I clicked on the link that you provided and it brought me to a description of inspection reports. How do I look up a specific restaurant?"
A. After arriving at the page that you describe, scroll down toward the bottom of the page and do one of the following: [1.] click on the word "search" in the text ("...This site allows you to search by restaurant name...") or [2.] click on the restaurant logo at the bottom of the page. From the resulting page, choose a borough and then look for your restaurant.
WARNING: You may not want to know what you learn from the report on your favorite restaurant. I have stopped patronizing some of my favorites after reading their health inspection reports.

It's (Cyber) War: China vs. U.S.
NewsLinks (May 1, 2001) - The first shots in a planned week-long cyberwar between Chinese and American hackers were fired early Monday, with Chinese hackers claiming credit for defacing a dozen U.S websites.
The attacked sites include the MCI Center in Washington, several Air Force sites and websites operated by the departments of Energy, Labor, and Health and Human Services.
American hackers swiftly responded by defacing 15 websites in China with ethnic jokes and calls for hackers to join the war. The American hackers have decided that the destruction of business websites and networks should be kept to a bare minimum, but all agreed that government-owned sites and systems should be hit hard and completely ruined if at all possible.
The U.S. government and military have stated that they have sharply stepped up network security in response to an FBI-led National Infrastructure Protection Center warning on Friday that urged businesses and governments to protect themselves against the threat of a week-long attempt to attack U.S. computer systems.
WEEKLY IN DEPTH...
Note: the following computer info will remain here for the entire week.
The Most Famous Computer Bug
We all know that in the realm of computing, the term bug means a glitch, error, or flaw that can compromise the workings of a computer system.
But where did the term come from?
In 1945, at the Naval Weapons Center in Dalhgren, Virginia, a moth flew into one of the relays of a Harvard Mark II computer and jammed it. Legendary computer science pioneer Grace Hopper found the bug. The moth was removed from the system and taped to the official report of the incident, making that document the first bug report in history.
The report, bug still intact, resides in the Smithsonian Institution.
