Fragmentation

Refers to the condition of a hard drive in which files are divided into pieces scattered around the disk.

Fragmentation occurs naturally when you use a disk frequently, creating, deleting, and modifying files.

At some point, the operating system needs to store parts of a file in noncontiguous clusters. This is entirely invisible to users, but it can slow down the speed at which data is accessed because the disk drive must search through different parts of the disk to put together a single file.

You can defragment a hard drive with the DEFRAG program that exists in Windows.  This program can be found by going to:

READER FEEDBACK...

A reader asks...

Q.   "I believe that you once featured a website that taught you how to glue different materials together.  How can I find that website?"

A.    The site to which you refer is called "This to That".  Click on the logo below to get there.  And the add it to your FAVORITE PLACES (BOOKMARKS) so that you'll have it available to you in the future.

WEEKLY IN DEPTH...

(Note: the following computer info will remain here for the entire week.)

Uniform Resource Locater

Ok... with all the time that we're spending on the WEB, it's time to start using the proper terminology.  Now repeat after me... Uniform Resource Locator (URL).

A URL literally describes the access method and location of a place (web page) on the Internet.  For example, the URL http://www.computerguyny.com describes the type of access method being used (http is like a programming language) and the server (big computer) location which hosts the Web site (www.computerguyny.com).

All Web sites have URLs. One could say a URL is what a telephone number is to a telephone or a street address is to a house.

Although Web site URLs are sometimes long and hard to read let alone remember, browsers like Netscape and Internet Explorer have a bookmark (favorites) feature which gives you the opportunity to save the location (URL) of Web sites that you want to return to.

That wasn't so difficult, was it?
