Weekly A capability built into your modem that enables you to transmit and receive electronic documents as faxes. Here's some interesting info on faxing thru your computer... PRICE: fax modems are less expensive. In addition, they require less maintenance because there are no moving parts. However, if you need to purchase an optical scanner in addition to the fax modem, there is no price advantage. CONVENIENCE: fax modems are more convenient if the documents you want to send are already in electronic form. With a fax machine, you would first need to print the document. A fax modem lets you send it directly. SPEED: fax modems can almost always transmit documents at the maximum speed of 9,600 bps, whereas not all fax machines support such high data transmission rates. QUALITY: the image quality of documents transmitted by fax modems is usually superior because the documents remain in electronic form.

ComputerGuyNY Report Goes From Daily To Weekly
Starting today, June 11th, 2001, the ComputerGuyNY Report will be updated WEEKLY. It was a tough decision but a necessary one.
For over 6 months I updated this website five days a week (Mon-Fri). It was an ambitious undertaking that was motivated by my desire to offer a greater degree of computer literacy to my many friends and clients.
Spending almost two hours on each issue to research, program, correct and email out to both AOL and non-AOL subscribers has become a luxury that I can no longer afford to sustain on a daily basis.
Instead, I will now publish a WEEKLY version and continue to retain the high quality that has existed. I hope, also, to develop new features and attractions.
I know that the daily ritual of visiting this website has been a very rewarding informational and educational experience for many of you. But I also know that the volume of information has sometimes been overwhelming. Now, on a weekly basis, you will have more time to examine each issue and reap the benefits of the material presented to you.
So, each MONDAY a new issue will be published and I'll be sending all subscribers an email reminder every Monday morning.
I sincerely appreciate all of the positive feedback that I've received and the great pictures and articles that you've sent to me to include in the website. Keep those "cards and letters" coming.
And continue to enjoy ComputerGuyNY Report in its new weekly format.
Best Regards,
Adam
WEEKLY IN DEPTH...
MP3's
MP3s are audio files compressed to a small size. This makes them easy to transfer either over the Internet or from your hard drive to a disk or CD-R.
MP3s have sparked a musical revolution, changing the way many people listen to and acquire music.
What are MP3s good for? Portable MP3 players such as the Diamond Rio 500
MP3 player let you create a portable personal jukebox with a higher sound quality than that of a cassette.
You can also obtain MP3s on the Internet and listen to music right off your hard drive.
The quality, portability, and relatively small file size of MP3s has piqued the interest of the record industry.
Independent bands can now distribute their music worldwide without a record contract, but that's of minor concern.
What's really got the major labels in a tizzy is the trading and possible sale of their copyrighted material.
The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) tried to stop the release of the Diamond
Rio MP3 player, claiming the device encouraged illegal distribution of copyrighted music.
The judge ruled in Diamond's favor, but the RIAA promises more legal action if it finds people distributing music without permission of the copyright holder.
Creating and playing an MP3 on your home system is legal. Downloading an MP3 from a website is legal if the song's copyright holder has granted permission to download and play the song.
However, it is illegal to encode MP3s from CD and trade them without permission from the copyright holder.
It's kind of like Cuban cigars: It's OK to have them, it's OK to smoke (or play) them, but it's not OK to send them or buy them.
