Streaming

A technique for transferring data such that it can be processed as a steady and continuous stream.

Two features in this week's edition use this technology.  The TUNE this week is a 7 minute piano performance by my friend Doctor Ben.  Also, this week's ANIMATED GIF is not really an animated gif.  It's a 2 minute streaming video tribute to Doctor Ben's late wife, Helen.

Streaming technologies are becoming increasingly important with the growth of the Internet because most users do not have fast enough access to download large multimedia files quickly.

With streaming, your web browser (using the REALPLAYER plug-in) can start displaying the data before the entire file has been transmitted.

If you don't have an up to date version of REALPLAYER you can get it for FREE by clicking on the logo below.

Enjoy the streaming audio and video all over the WEB.

READER FEEDBACK...

Q.   "Great website!  Any helpful comments about navigating around the site?"

A.    Glad you asked!

First of all, the site is updated weekly, each Monday morning.

Note that there is a "table of contents" at the top of the page that allows you to go directly to the feature that most interests you.

I'm still experimenting with a newer and fuller weekly site.  I've added streaming video and audio (RealPlayer).  Check out both the "Tribute to Helen" in the animated gif section and "Doctor Ben Plays the Piano" in the tune section.

I've expanded the Computer News Briefs section.

And I'm working on alot of other new ideas so stay tuned.

Until next week, this is  your computer guy, changing the world one computer user at a time.

Best regards,

Adam

WEEKLY IN DEPTH...

Browser Plug-ins

Have you ever surfed the Web and run across a big, empty, gray box with what looks like a puzzle piece inside? Or perhaps you've tried to play a music file, video, or game you've found on the Web, and instead of playing, you get a message like this; "You have selected content type application/x-blankety-blank.There is no viewer available," when the file won't play?

Before you say "Dawgonnit, this thing don't work!", let me share a secret; the problem can be fixed easily and for free.

You've run into something that requires a plug-in to be seen or heard or both. Plug-ins are computer programs that work with your Web browser to allow multimedia elements on websites to function. Without plug-ins, the Web is basically just words and pictures; plug-ins add animation, live streaming video, interactive games, even three-dimensional spaces.

Think of a plug-in like a car option. The browser is the base model, but it doesn't have all the amenities, like air conditioning and AM/FM stereo.

Plug-ins are special add-on programs that work with your web browser.  They allow you to view videos, hear music and experience special effects that exist on many websites.

Example... in this week's edition of ComputerGuyNY Report there are two features that require the RealPlayer plug-in.  If you have it, you can see the video that I made and you can listen to the piano music that my friend recorded.

The current must-have plug-ins include Shockwave, QuickTime, and RealPlayer.

Shockwave allows for great animation and multimedia presentations.

QuickTime plays just about every recorded movie clip on the Web.

RealPlayer is the king of all streaming music and video.

If you run into a site that requests a plug-in you don't have, here's how you get it:

Both Netscape and Explorer will direct you to a plug-in library or to the download site of the plug-in maker. Most of these plug-ins have their own expanders, so after you download the file just click on it and follow the directions.

Quitting and then restarting your browser should make the plug-in active.

TIP - Consider getting high speed access.  It's a whole new world of browsing the WEB as you use these plug-ins.  If you have any questions about it just send me an email.
