Computer
Security

Refers to techniques for ensuring that data stored in a computer cannot be read or compromised.

Most security measures involve data encryption and passwords.

Data encryption is the translation of data into a form that is unintelligible without a deciphering mechanism.

A password is a secret word or phrase that gives a user access to a particular program or computer system.

Check out the WEEKLY IN DEPTH feature below for instructions on setting a password for your screensaver.

READER FEEDBACK...

Q.   "I really liked that animated graphic of the quill pen writing your name.  Is there a way I can get such a graphic like that with my name?"

A.    I "stole" that graphic from the website listed below.  There are many names that are available.  Check to see if your name is there.

Until next week, this is  your computer guy, changing the world one computer user at a time.

Best regards,

Adam

COMPUTER NEWS BRIEFS...

Grave Diggers
"My goal is to catalog everyone who has ever died and been buried."

Next-Generation Internet is Already Here
"But don't call and ask to be hooked up until you check your bank account."

Big News or Windows Dressing?
"Kathy McKiernan, a spokeswoman for AOL-Time Warner, said Microsoft wasn't going nearly as far as it needed to in making its operating system truly flexible."

A possible successor to Napster
"The program is designed to work without a central server or distribution point, which unlike Napster will make it difficult for the record industry to shut down."

Americans want more online rules, survey says
"64 percent said the government should develop rules to protect people when they are online, and 58 percent said businesses and individuals could not be trusted to regulate their own online behavior."

WEEKLY IN DEPTH...

Setting a Screensaver Password

One way to prevent someone from using your computer is to password-protect a screen saver. If your computer is inactive long enough, a screen saver will turn on and require a password before it turns off.

To set up a screen saver with a password, follow these directions:

1. Left-click on the Start menu, Settings and then left-click Control Panel.

2. Double-click the Display icon.

3. Select the Screen Saver tab.

4. Select a screen saver from the pull-down menu if one isn't already selected.

5. Place a checkmark in the Password field and then hit the Change button.

6. Determine a password and enter it twice.

7. Select OK when you've finished entering a password.

P.S. - If you need greater security than just a screensaver password, send me an email and I'll reply with instruction on setting a BIOS password.  But this is more serious stuff and if you forget your BIOS password it'll take some major work to become functional again.
