Weekly A computer worm is a self-contained program that is able to spread functional copies of itself to other computer systems. The propagation usually takes place via network connections (such as the Internet) or email attachments. To get rid of a worm you normally just need to delete the program. The greatest threat of a "worm" type virus is that it can overload the Internet. Without your knowlwdge or permission, the "worm" virus raids your email address book and sends a copy of itself to all of the addresses contained in your address book. Since the email came from you, your friends trust the "worm" attachment, open it and the cycle continues. Antivirus programs such as Norton Antivirus 2001 scan your email as it arrives and warns you of those emails that contain a virus.

Q. "What antivirus program do you use?"
A. I have a preference for Norton Antivirus from Symantec but all of the big ones are good. Some of the nice features in the Norton product are the automatic reminders to update your virus definitions (protecting you against the latest viruses) and the scanning of your email for viruses before you open the email.
You can purchase Norton Antivirus 2001 locally or you can get it at their website that is listed below.

WEEKLY IN DEPTH...
Code Red Virus
What is Code Red?
Code Red is a virulent worm exploiting a known security flaw in Microsoft's Web Internet Information Server Software (IIS).
Internet Service Providers and other businesses use this type of software. Code Red contains code that launches an attack on the IP address associated with
whitehouse.gov.
How does Code Red work?
Code Red works by taking advantage of a glitch in Microsoft's IIS software, which is used by more than six million servers on the Internet, allowing hackers to run malicious code on those computers.
Despite Microsoft's efforts to publicize the flaw, many system administrators have failed to download the patch. This slow response has allowed Code Red to infect millions of servers still using unpatched versions of the software.
What versions of Windows are at risk?
The only computers affected are those running unpatched versions of Microsoft's IIS server software 4.0 or 5.0 on Windows NT 4.0, 2000, or XP beta.
If you use Windows Me, 98, 95, or 3.1, you should not be affected by the worm.
Where did it come from?
It's unclear where the worm came from, although officials first suspected China because the message found on infected websites says, "Hacked by Chinese." Chinese network safety officials deny these allegations.
Will Code Red bring down the Net?
Probably not, but it has the potential. If enough servers were infected or enough servers were vulnerable, the amount of traffic generated could bring the Net to a standstill.
