Geek

Short for computer geek, an individual with a passion for computers, to the exclusion of other normal human interests.

Depending on the context, it can be used in either a derogatory or affectionate manner. Basically, geek and nerd are synonymous

.

The term hacker tends to refer to the more programming intense set of the geek crowd. However the term is overused in the popular media, and therefore is no longer much used among "real geeks". Hacker also has negative connotations related to cracking, or illegally obtaining access to computers and accounts.

WEEKLY IN DEPTH...

New Microsoft Keyboard

After three years of research, Microsoft has released a new keyboard that is very functional and efficient for using both normal computer software and for surfing the WEB.

The USB keyboard has smooth, contoured edges. While larger than a standard keyboard at 20 inches by 10 inches by .75 inches, the extra surface area goes a long way.

The most noticeable physical feature -- besides the oversized Ctrl, Windows, and Alt keys, and larger Space bar -- is a swooping band of gray plastic along the left side and bottom of the keyboard that houses the Single Touch Pad and a comfortable wrist rest. The Single Touch Pad, located on the far left of the keyboard, radically changes the way users compute by adding Back and Forward page buttons and a heavy duty scroll wheel.

Imagine using both hands to navigate through webpages -- one on the mouse, the other on the Single Touch Pad. In addition, the innovative Pad includes cut, copy, and paste buttons, and an application switch that lets users toggle between applications and windows with a single press of a button.

The function keys also serve a dual purpose. The keys are clustered into groups of three and serve specific purposes for efficient computing. Among the key functions: Documents (New, Open, Close), Email (Reply, Forward, Send), and convenient Spell, Save, and Print buttons.

As far as keyboards go, the Microsoft Office Keyboard will certainly pay off for those who surf the Web or use Office applications.
