Did you know that...

..."zero in tennis is called 'love' because of the zero's resemblence to an egg. Since the scoring in tennis was believed to have originated in France and an egg of course is called 'un eoef' in French, when tennis terms were anglicized, 'eoef' became 'love'."

Proportional
Spacing

Using different widths for different characters.

In a proportionally spaced font, the letter I is narrower than the letter Q.  Most books, magazines, and newspapers use a proportionally spaced font.

The opposite of proportional spacing is monospacing. In a monospaced font, each character has the same width.

Non-graphics display screens, display text in a monospaced font.

Almost all printers, with the exception of line printers, are able to print with either proportionally spaced or monospaced fonts.

READER FEEDBACK...

Q.   "Alot of websites have opening pages that show a movie-like presentation.  I use a 56k modem and it sometimes takes forever to load this stuff.  What are my options?"

A.    Yep, I know what you mean.  These sites are using an animation technology called FLASH.

It's pretty, it's entertaining and it's a LARGE file that's being transmitted to you.  It's assumed that you have High Speed Internet Access and that it'll download quickly.

What are your options if you don't have High Speed Access?

1.  Be patient and let it download.

2.  Click the "SKIP INTRO" button if it is available.

3.  Get High Speed DSL or CABLE access.

I have added a FLASH presentation as a regular feature to this website.  You'll find it below.  Check it out.  It's really good.  Feel free to get a fresh cup of coffee during the 3 minutes it'll take to download.  It's 777k in size but it's worth every "k".

And remember that you can "steal" it by right-clicking on the link and choosing "save link as".

Until next week, this is  your computer guy, changing the world one computer user at a time.

Best regards,

Adam

WEEKLY IN DEPTH...

EMAIL ATTACHMENTS

It's one thing to click on and read an email.  It's another thing to click on an attachment that's included in the email.

If you must play the attachment-opening game, make sure you look closely at file names.

Photos normally have one of the following 3 letter "extensions" after the photo name...  JPG or BMP or GIF.

They do not have EXE or VBS at the end.

What might look like a simple picture of Aunt Millie's kittens, CUTE_CALICO.JPG.exe, has the .exe at the end. It's not a picture, and it's not cute! Don't open it!

Also watch out for the .vbs extension. This indicates a Visual Basic script. That's the language in which some viruses operate. Chances are very, very slim that anyone will send you a Visual Basic script innocently.

Viruses are extremely cunning, sometimes using file names from victims' own computers to appear legitimate. If the extension is .exe, .vbs. or something you've never seen before don't open it.

I normally do not open any executable (EXE) attachments unless I'm expecting someone to email me such a computer program.  And I'll double check by calling or emailing the sender to confirm that the file is safe to open.

Now you know and you won't be fooled.
