Did you know that...

..."the word “bald” originally meant “white” or “clean” and not “hairless”. When a man lost his hair, his head would look clean and white, thus, bald. The bald eagle was so named because of its smooth, white head, and not because its head is bare."

Auction for
America

Popular online auctioneer eBay has opened a charitable auction site to benefit victims of the recent attacks and challenged itself to raise $100 million in 100 days in its "Auction for America."

Under the program, eBay is asking users to list charity items for sale. And eBay has actually contributed one million dollars to that $100 million goal in an effort to get the "Auction for America" started.

The kinds of items being offered are incredibly varied.  Companies like Handspring and Palm are putting up hundreds of PDAs.  Widows of veterans are putting up the flags that they were given at their husbands' funerals.

People from all across America are going to their garages and searching their homes for things that they can donate.

And  100 percent of the proceeds goes to the September 11 fund and the Twin Towers fund.

READER FEEDBACK...

Q.   "How rich is Bill Gates?"

A.    Bill Gates, despite losing over $7 billion over the past year, is still the richest person in America -- by a long shot.  With $54 billion, he's 38% wealthier than the second richest person.  Gates puts lots of his money to good use -- The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is worth some $23.5 billion.

Until next week, this is  your computer guy, changing the world one computer user at a time.

Best regards,

Adam

COMPUTER NEWS BRIEFS...

Compromise For CD Copying Is In The Works
"The reality here is that none of these CD copy-protection techniques is going to be successful in the long term. They're fraught with technical difficulties, and if they did surmount those, they would meet with a severe consumer backlash."

Attacks Spawn Online Rumors, Hoaxes
"Among the bogus stories is a Nostradamus prophecy about World War III  and a report that CNN used old footage to falsely depict Palestinians celebrating after the attack."

White House Nixes National ID Notion
"On Capitol Hill, some lawmakers had surmised that support for a national ID card system would now be strong among Americans."

Free-Space Optics Provides Quick Fix in Manhattan
"Free space optics moves data traffic on lasers between buildings without an encasing fiber.  Transmitting rooftop-to-rooftop or window-to-window, a single laser shot can carry a gigabit of traffic."

Free Wireless Goes Underground
"The wireless signal does not in and of itself access the Internet. Instead, it provides an avenue for numerous people to share an existing broadband Internet service, such as a cable or DSL connection."
