Product
Activation

Product Activation is an anti-piracy technology built into the new Microsoft Windows XP Operating System (and the new Microsoft Office XP).

Product Activation requires that the user verify the product key (serial number) that was used to install the product.

Users must activate their software via the Internet or telephone.

Once the user has contacted Microsoft, an installation ID number is issued that will allow the software to function.

According to Microsoft, the user has 50 grace launches before a product must be activated. After the 50 launches, the product will not perform properly.

This requirement that the user contact Microsoft to "activate" the software ensures that the software has not been used on more than one computer.

COMPUTER NEWS BRIEFS...

Why Tragedies Spawn Online Hoaxes
"Despite an opportunity to create the latest and greatest hoaxes, many of the fabrications making the rounds on e-mail servers across the country are old ruses that have been dusted off and refashioned for our times."

E-Mail Meets Cellular Phones
"The service works on most cell phones and can connect to any e-mail account except Hotmail and AOL."

Intelligence Data Pulled From Websites
"Even private websites have taken down details about military bases and intelligence offices but government watchdogs warn that national security could be used as a pretext to keep information from the public."

A Secret Language
"Images that might be in an e-mail message can contain a picture of a dog or a cat but can actually be hiding a secret message inside the image that no one else would be able to detect."

San Francisco Bans Internet Filters At Public Libraries
"Internet access that the library provides is often used by folks from different ethnic communities who may not have computers in their own homes and that's where the free speech issue is especially significant."

WEEKLY IN DEPTH...

BUFFER

A BUFFER is a temporary storage area.

The purpose of most buffers is to act as a holding area that stores information and then feeds that information to a different part of a computer system.

Some of the different kinds of BUFFERS in your computer are:

1.  Print Buffer  -  When you tell the computer to print a document, the data is sent to a buffer in your printer that slowly feeds the data as it prints. (Another name for this is "spooling".)

2.  CD-R Buffer  -  When you "burn" (create) a CD, the data (music, photos, etc.) is sent to a buffer that slowly feeds the data to the CD. (If the buffer empties out, you have a problem called "buffer underrun".)

3.  RAM Buffer  -   When your computer is operating normally, alot of information is being processed within the electronics of the machine and some of that data is temporarily stored in RAM (memory) buffers.  (Another name for this is "cache".)

So, we see that BUFFERS are temporary "holding areas" for data as it travels to its final destination.
