Windows XP

The operating system introduced in October, 2001 from Microsoft's Windows family of operating systems, the previous version of Windows being Windows Me.

Microsoft called the release its most important product since Windows 95.

Along with a redesigned look and feel to the user interface, the new operating system is built on the Windows 2000 kernel, giving the user a more stable and reliable environment than previous versions of Windows.

Windows XP comes in two version, Home and Professional.

Where the Professional Edition focuses on reliability and security, the Home Edition includes extensive digital photography, digital music, digital video, home networking and communications features.

READER FEEDBACK...

Q.   "Dear Bianca and Peaches, I loved your costumes - they were beautiful!!"

Q.   "Happy Halloween to you and the 'kids'."

Q.   "Your Halloween graphics are Terroriffic!!!!!!"

Q.   "What drugs did you put Peaches on to make her eyes look like that?"

Q.   "Hi Adam... Is Peaches Real?"

A.    Yep, Peaches is real but the fake eyes are not.  And to my brother who is the adopted father of Bianca's brother, no that is not your dog under the mask.  I peeked under that mask and it is, in fact, Bianca.

Many thanks for all of the email complements that I received about the Halloween Edition.  Remember, you can always go back to see the past issues by clicking on the spinning counter graphic that's next to the real counter further down this page.  Click HERE to jump down there right now.

Until next week, this is  your computer guy, changing the world one computer user at a time.

Best regards,

Adam

ON THE LIGHTER SIDE...

       WHO KNOWS THE WORD FOR...

...the act, when vacuuming, of running over a string or a piece of lint at least a dozen times, reaching over and picking it up, examining it, then putting it back down to give the vacuum one more chance.

COMPUTER NEWS BRIEFS...

States Reject Microsoft-DOJ Settlement
"There's no question that the champagne should be flowing very freely in Redmond. The settlement ensures Microsoft's continued dominance."

Consumers Aren't Rushing To Buy XP
"It’s been advised everywhere that if you have a machine over two years old, just wait until you upgrade your machine. XP is much more powerful and requires much more technology than previous operating systems."

At Amazon, Buy Now, Pay Later
"Making an effort to reach recession-weary shoppers, Amazon touted the credit offering as the solution for holiday shoppers and also said it may make it possible for people without a bank card or credit card to shop online at Amazon.com."

Osama Can't Find Our Internet Secrets
"To avoid providing information that terrorist could use, federal agencies, as well as some state and private Web page operators, have been taking material off the Internet, sometimes in wholesale fashion."

News That's Fit to Download
"Now, instead of waiting for the paper to arrive on the doorstep, you can download an electronic version overnight, open it on the laptop on your way to work and delve through articles at the office."

WEEKLY IN DEPTH...

System Tray Icons

See those icons sitting next to your clock in the lower right corner of your monitor?  That area is called your system tray.  And those icons represent programs that started up automatically when Windows started.

The antivirus icon you want to keep there.  Alot of the others are just slowing your computer down by using up valuable resources.

First, to identify them, just rest your mouse pointer on the each icon.  Its name will appear.

How can we get rid of some of them?  Glad you asked!

1.  Click on START.  Click on RUN.

2.  Type in MSCONFIG and click on OK.

3.  You'll be at the SYSTEM CONFIGURATION UTILITY.

4.  Click on the STARTUP tab.

5.  You now see alot of programs that automatically start up when Windows starts.

6.  You can UNCHECK each one that you don't want to automatically start up.

7.  If you don't know what the program is, leave it alone cause it might be need by Windows to have your computer run properly.

8.  If you do know what the program is, uncheck the box if you don't want it to start up automatically.

That's all there is to it.
