In 1918, on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day in the eleventh month, the world rejoiced and celebrated. After four years of bitter war, an armistice was signed. The "war to end all wars" was over.

FLAG

In the world of computers, a FLAG is a software or hardware mark that signals a particular condition or status.

A flag is like a switch that can be either on or off. The flag is said to be set when it is turned on.

Another use for the term FLAG is that of a special mark indicating that a piece of data is unusual. For example, a record might contain an error flag to indicate that the record consists of unusual, probably incorrect, data.

As a verb the term FLAG is used in the conventional sense -- to mark an object to indicate that a particular event has occurred or that the object marked is unusual is some way.

READER FEEDBACK...

Q.   "Here's one that'll stump you.  What is the one place where the American flag flies 24 hours a day, is never raised or lowered and is never saluted?"

A.    The MOON.

Until next week, this is  your computer guy, changing the world one computer user at a time.

Best regards,

Adam

WEEKLY IN DEPTH...

FLAG ETIQUETTE

Because it's good to know...

Display the flag only between sunrise and sunset on buildings and stationary flagstaffs.

The flag may be displayed for twenty-four hours if illuminated in darkness.

Do not display the flag in inclement weather.

Whether displaying the flag vertically or horizontally, make sure the canton of stars is visible on the upper left-hand side.

Do not let the flag touch the ground.

An unusable flag that is damaged and worn and can no longer be displayed should be destroyed in a dignified way by burning.

When not on display, the flag should be respectfully folded into a triangle, symbolizing the tricorn hats worn by colonial soldiers in the Revolutionary War.

So now you know.
