802.11b

802.11b refers to a method of connecting computers together without using wires, hence the term "wireless".

This is often referred to as a "wireless LAN" (local area network).

This technology allows information to be transmitted among computers in the same building at a speed that is just as fast as if wires were used to cennect the computers.

The obvious advantage of this technology is that it would not be necessary to run wiring to connect together a network of computers.

Actually, it's very similar to the cordless phone that you use at home.

Recently, a popular use for 802.11b is sharing one Internet account among many computers in a home or business.

This "Internet Sharing" uses the wireless technology combined with a "router" (that splits the Internet signal) and it allows many family members to simultaneously use the one Internet connection.

READER FEEDBACK...

Q.   "Here's a "NO KIDS ALLOWED" item that your "mature" readers will enjoy.

A.    Thanks to S. Hersh for allowing me, ever so briefly, to go back in time and re-live my long lost youth.

My suggestion to you over 50's folks is to pause for a moment and treat yourself to a unique experience.  And don't rush thru it but, rather, allow yourself the time to enjoy the moment.

And be alone... so that, as you smile, no one will notice the lone tear that slides down your cheek.

Are you ready?  Then CLICK HERE.

Until next week, this is  your computer guy, changing the world one computer user at a time.

Best regards,

Adam

E-Mail Virus Slams Muslim Group

WEEKLY IN DEPTH...

SOFTWARE

There are four ways that vendors distribute software:

1. Public-domain
2. Freeware
3. Shareware
4. Paid

PUBLIC-DOMAIN refers to any software that is not copyrighted. It is free and can be used without restriction.  The term public-domain software is often used incorrectly to include freeware.  Often the author of public-domain author is unknown.

FREEWARE software is, in fact, copyrighted and is offered by the author at no charge.

SHAREWARE is software that you are allowed to use on a trial basis and usually expires after a specific amount of time or uses.  Shareware then stops functioning or is limited in some manner. The reason for the great popularity of shareware stems from the fact that anyone can freely distribute their software without paying alot of money to advertise the product.

PAID software is, as the name implies, paid for before you can use it.   As with most other things in life, we pay for it and then we own it and can use it.

An excellent source of public-domain, freeware and shareware software is...
