Virtual

Not real.

The term "virtual" is popular among computer scientists and is used in a wide variety of situations.

In general, it distinguishes something that is merely conceptual from something that has physical reality.

The difference is a bit like the difference between an architect's plans for a house and the actual house.

Hence, Virtual Reality is an experience in which one seems to be interacting with something real but, in fact, is an interaction with a non physical computer world.

On the WEB you visit Virtual Shopping Malls and Virtual Libraries.

A "brick and mortar" store on the corner is a physical building while a "virtual" store on the WEB is not a physical structure.

READER FEEDBACK...

Q.   "Congrats to you on the occasion of the first anniversary of your ComputerGuyNY Reports website.  After one year of sharing all this info with us, do you have a favorite site, a favorite pic, a favorite animated gif?

A.    Thanks for the congrats. My favorites?  I guess, if I had to choose, I'd pick the following...

Favorite Website:

Oasis allows you to pick any geographic area in New York City and zoom in on an aerial photo.  You'll not only see what your neighborhood (or house) looks like from the sky but also get information about the actual lot number.

Favorite Pic:

Favorite Animated Gif:

Until next week, this is  your computer guy, changing the world one computer user at a time.

Best regards,

Adam

COMPUTER NEWS BRIEFS...

KaZaA Says It Can't Stop File Swapping
"The computer program has already been distributed.  KaZaA can't see what sort of files people are sharing or who its users are.  KaZaA said it simply can't do what the Judge ordered. Why? Because it has no way of identifying those who use its software."

Internet Now 'Ingrained' in American Life
"72.3 percent of Americans went online in 2001, up from 66.9 percent in 2000.  The primary reason that 27.7 percent of Americans are not online is lack of access to an adequate computer -- or no computer at all."

Digital Cameras Are Hot For The Holiday
"Searches for various brands of digital cameras have accounted
for at least half of the 10 most popular searches over the last two weeks."

Online Limits To The First Amendment
"In the end, having a set of laws for digital information on the Internet and a set of laws for the non-digital world doesn't make sense.  We must have a uniform set of laws.  New technology doesn't alter basic rights and tenets."

AOL Loses Appeal To Halt Class-Action Suit
"The suit, first filed in February 2000, arises from the issue of whether AOL provided sufficient notification in its advertising that subscribers might be required to use long-distance dialup numbers. In its ads, America Online promised 'unlimited Internet access' for $19.95 per month. The ads did run a small-print disclaimer, stating that users might incur a charge by using long-distance numbers."

WEEKLY IN DEPTH...

ARCHIVES

On this first anniversary of the ComputerGuyNY Report website, let me direct you to the ARCHIVES that will allow you to review all of the stuff that has been posted on this site during that last year.

First there is the Main Archive that lists each new issue by date.  You can get there by clicking HERE.

Next there is the PIC Archive that contains all of the photos that have been featured.  Click HERE to get there.

Lastly, we have that Animated Gif Archives.  Let me warn you that those of you who have a 56k modem might wait as long as 10 minutes for all of those gifs to finish loading.  But it's worth it cause they're really good.  Click HERE and then go get a cup of coffee.

You might want to "steal" some of the graphics once you get there. (Just right-click on the graphic and choose "save as" from the menu.)

Enjoy!
