Weekly Yahoo! is a World Wide Web directory started by two students at Stanford University. The two began compiling and categorizing Web pages in 1994. By 1996, they had one of the most popular Web sites and a very valuable commodity. Yahoo continues to be an extremely popular way to search the World Wide Web. And if you'd like to know WHAT people are searching for at YAHOO, take a look at YAHOO's WEEKLY BUZZ LIST. To get to the list just...
P.S. - Other methods of searching the Web include... Google, Infoseek, Alta Vista, etc. For a more complete listing of popular search engines... |

Q. "Where can I find the reasons that Netscape cannot launch an application when I click on something at a website?
A. Netscape is a BROWSER, that is, a "viewer" for the World Wide Web. The other popular browser is Microsoft Internet Explorer. (And you AOL users are using a special edition of Internet Explorer.)
Both browsers accept "plug-ins". A "plug-in" is a third party program that works with the browser. Some popular plug-ins are REAL PLAYER (for audio and video), FLASH (for movie-like animation files), Apple's QUICKTIME (for 360 degree photo viewing), Adobe ACROBAT (for viewing special types of enhanced documents).
If a website expects you to have the proper plug-in and you don't have it, you'll get an error message that tells you that the browser is unable to open that special type of website file.
For a listing and description of popular plug-ins for Netscape you can CLICK HERE.
Usually, if you don't have a specific plug-in, you'll be told what plug-in you need and where you can get it. If not, be a detective and try to figure out what you clicked on that gave you the error message. If all else fails, send all of the info to me...
and we'll figure it out together.
Until next week, this is your computer guy, changing the world one computer user at a time.
Best regards,
Adam

WEEKLY IN DEPTH...
LAN
A LAN
(local-area network) is a
group of computers that is connected together (by wire or wireless). These
computers would be located in a relatively small area. Most LANs are confined to a single building or group of buildings.
However, one LAN can be connected to other LANs over any distance via telephone lines and radio waves.
A system of LANs connected in this way is called a WAN (wide-area network).
Most LANs connect workstations and personal computers. Each node (individual computer ) in a LAN has its own CPU
(brain) with which it executes programs, but it is also able to access data and devices anywhere on the LAN.
This means that many users can share expensive devices, such as laser printers, as well as data.
Users can also use the LAN to communicate with each other, by sending e-mail or engaging in chat sessions.
Your personal computer is a node on a very large network called the Internet.
If you have several computers in your home you could connect them together and you would have your own... that's right.... your own LAN.
