Algorithms

A formula or set of steps for solving a particular problem.

To be an algorithm, a set of rules must be unambiguous and have a clear stopping point. Algorithms can be expressed in any language, whether that be the English language or a computer programming language..

We use algorithms every day. For example, a recipe for baking a cake is an algorithm.

Most computer programs consist of algorithms.

Inventing elegant algorithms -- algorithms that are simple and require the fewest steps possible -- is one of the principal challenges in computer programming.

READER FEEDBACK...

Q.   "What service do you use to get free music now that Napster isn't available?

A.    When I want some new music I use Morpheus at www.musiccity.com.  It has alot of ads but it's free of "adware software".  That's a term that describes secretly hidden software that's installed on your computer when you install most music retrieving programs.  This "adware" tracks your surfing habits and targets advertisement to you based upon your surfing interests.  Besides being an invasion of privacy, it slows things down cause it's constantly interacting with your computer.

For you KaZaA users, Morpheus will look quite familiar cause it's the exact same software... minus the adware.  I found it interesting that when I removed alot of adware stuff from my computer using a program called AdAware, my KaZaA wouldn't function.  Rather, I was advised to reinstall KaAaA.  I never did.

Until next week, this is  your computer guy, changing the world one computer user at a time.

Best regards,

Adam

ON THE LIGHTER SIDE...

     .What's the word for...

... "the water that comes out of the initial squirts of a squeeze mustard bottle."

The best I can come up with is "musquirt".

COMPUTER NEWS BRIEFS...

For Online Retailers, It's Showtime
"Consumers choose a gift from the AIM Instant Gifts catalog; choose a recipient from their Buddy List or provide an e-mail address; enter their own AIM Screen Name in the "From" field; fill out billing information, and add a personal greeting. An instant message "Gift Alert" is automatically sent and the recipient needs only to click on the highlighted link to choose to accept the gift, and then provide their shipping information for delivery."

Health Is Top Teen Web Lure
"The study shows how important it is to put high-quality information on the Web about problems they aren't likely to discuss with family or health care providers."

Web Radio Not Making Waves
"The Internet was supposed to give anyone the power to run their very own radio station. For a very few it has, but Internet-only radio has not come close to achieving its potential."

Bosses: Check to See Who's Been Naughty
"If every employee with Internet access at work spends a mere hour in online shopping during the month of December, productivity costs to U.S. businesses could surpass half a billion dollars."

Early Archive of Net Rants and Raves Restored
"Google made good on its promise, bringing back an essential voice of the Internet's early years. Rants, reviews, and "new" discoveries in all their unedited glory have been restored, dating back to 1981."

WEEKLY IN DEPTH...

Don't Get Suckered

"RealOne" is the newest player from RealNetworks.  This player is a combination of RealPlayer and RealJukebox.

But don't get suckered in.  They say it's only $9.95... and when you start placing your order you find out that it's $9.95 EVERY MONTH.

RealOne is a good idea -- on paper.  However, in reality it's just another player.  Although it's supposed to be free, RealOne tries desperately to trick you into paying for the GoldPass, which gives you access to exclusive content, including songs from the MusicNet library.

The GoldPass costs $9.95 per month.  If you didn't want it and were suckered into paying for it, you have to navigate the labyrinth of RealNetworks to stop the charges.

This has been common practice with this company.  It's extremely difficult to find the free version of their product cause they hide it in small print someplace down on the webpage.

So be careful cause they're real sneaky as they try to con you into buying it.
