Site Map

A visual model of the pages of a Web site.

Site maps help users navigate through a Web site that has more than one page by showing the user a diagram of the entire site's contents.

Similar to a book's table of contents, the site map makes it easier for a user to find information on a site without having to navigate through the site's many pages.

Not all Web sites will have a site map. The less intricate a site is the less need there is for a site map to guide users.

Example

My ISP (Internet Service Provider) is Earthlink.  If I was having a problem trying to find information at the Earthlink site about high speed access (broadband) tech support, I might visit their site map page for assistance.

CLICK on the link below to see the Earthlink site map web page.

READER FEEDBACK...

Q.   "A few issues ago you mentioned that the latest REALPLAYER has had a name change and that it was difficult to find the free version.  Can you give us a link to the free version?"

A.    Sure.

Take note of the following.  The new name for Real Player + Real Jukebox is "REALONE PLAYER".

At the real.com website you are steered to the paid version of RealOne.  The paid version gives you access to free music and other perks but it costs $9.95 EACH MONTH.

To get the FREE version of RealOne player do the following...

1.  Click on the logo link below.
2.  Look for the small button that's located halfway down the page on the left.
3.  Click on that button
4. From the page that you arrive at, ignore the "free 14 day trial".  Rather look at the RIGHT side of the page and scroll down to the bottom.  Look for "Download the Free RealOne Player Only" and click on it.
5.  If you don't see the words "PLAYER ONLY", you are clicking on the WRONG button.  (You got suckered into clicking on the "free trial" $9.95 a month service.)
6.  From the next page commence to fill in the info that is requested.

Have you noticed that they didn't make it easy to get the FREE VERSION (not to be confused with the "free $9.95 a month trial")?

Well, here's the logo that'll start you off.  Click on it and then follow the six steps outlined above.

P.S. - Read all of the prompts that appear as you install RealOne Player cause it will want to make itself the default player for all types of things.  Best bet is to decline all of the prompts relating to making it the default.

P.P.S. - You have to go thru the above steps cause they set up the links in such a way that disallows you from jumping straight to the "free player" page.

Until next week, this is  your computer guy, changing the world one computer user at a time.

ON THE LIGHTER SIDE...

     What's the word for...

... "the crevice on an ashtray where the cigarette rests."

The best I can come up with is "buttnick".

COMPUTER NEWS BRIEFS...

Higher Access Fee Hits Some AOL Users
"America Online has quietly raised the price for people wishing to access AOL through their own Internet service.  The online unit of AOL Time Warner raised the monthly subscription fee for its "Bring Your Own Access" (BYOA) plan by $5 to $14.95."

Sept. 11 Myths On The Web
"All the stories were urgent and riveting — and untrue. In the weeks after the Sept. 11 attacks, there has been a surge in urban legends — tales that travel at warp speed through the Internet and across neighborhood fences — gathering embellishments as they go."

E-Commerce Costs US Postal Service
"Instead of making money for the Postal Service, the e-commerce initiatives have required subsidies from other USPS operations."

Student Defends Handling Of AIM Flaw
"The student said that he sent an e-mail around Dec. 25 to several AOL e-mail addresses, including one listed on the AIM web site for reporting bugs.  He waited a week and when he heard nothing from AOL he announced the flaw and released a 'proof of concept' to demonstrate the vulnerability."

Trolling The Web For Afghan Dead
"Among the more serious allegations is the accusation that the U.S. government has tried to create a news blackout in Afghanistan. In October, Washington bought exclusive rights to all the commercial satellite images of Afghanistan and pressured the independent Al-Jazeera television station to tone down anti-American rhetoric."

WEEKLY IN DEPTH...

What is USB?

USB, or Universal Serial Bus is a connectivity specification developed by computer and telecommunication industry members for attaching peripherals to computers.

On the back of your computer (usually directly under your connectors for your mouse and keyboard) you see two narrow vertical connector slots (ports).  These are your USB ports.

USB is designed to free you from all of the complications when installing external peripherals (mouse, keyboard, zip drive, CD burner, mp3 player, digital camera, etc.).  It eliminates the hassle of opening your computer case to install cards needed for certain devices.

It's designed to meet Microsoft Plug and Play (PnP) specification, meaning users can install, and hot-swap devices without long installation procedures and reboots.

Furthermore, it allows 127 devices to run at the same time.  Even though you see only two connectors (USB ports) you can buy an "expander" that will allow you to connect many more USB devices.
