Weekly Refers to techniques used to prevent the unauthorized copying of software. The idea of copy-protected software was created by software manufacturers who wanted to prevent software piracy -- users copying programs and giving them to friends and colleagues free of charge. Most software producers now protect their programs by issuing registration numbers with each package. When you install the software, you must enter the registration number. This does not prevent all piracy, but it limits it.

Q. "I'm sure that you mentioned it before, but could you tell us again the name of the software that you use to "dress up" Bianca on the various holidays?"
A. I use Paint Shop Pro (Version 7). It has lots and lots of features but you only have to use those things that interest you. It's good for all levels of photo editing.
I always fix up my pics with some quick cropping, a little bit of sharpening and some adjustments in brightness and contrast.
I love the "picture frame" feature and there's nothing that beats the "tubes" feature that allows me to add all kinds of extra items (balloons, candy, flowers, etc.) into the original photo.
Here's some of the Bianca holiday pics. Just click on one of the "thumbnail" pics below to see it full size.
Hey, ya know, I still teach. If you have a scanner or a digital camera and want to learn how to use Paint Shop Pro and other photo editing programs, just send me an email and we'll set up an appointment. And our rates are dirt cheap. So, Click Here to email me for more info about visiting you for a photo editing tutorial session and maybe we'll get together and make you a photo editing pro.
Until next week, this is your computer guy, changing the world one computer user at a time.

ON THE LIGHTER SIDE...
What's the word for...
...
"the small line of debris that refuses to be swept onto the dust pan and keeps backing a person across the room until he/she finally decides to give up and sweep it under the rug."
The best I can come up with is "frust".
Microsoft Brings DVD Into The Picture
"Dell, which started offering PCs with DVD recording drives last month, sees a huge market ahead for the technology.
'If it follows the popularity of rewritable CDs, it will be very popular,' Dell said."
Napster Opens Beta Test Of Service
"Some 110,000 tracks will be available free to the chosen music-hungry swappers, but unlike the overwhelmingly popular May 1999 incarnation of the service, none of it will come from major labels."
Web Site Spins Profit From Unwanted Goods
"Overstock.com's merchandise is new, not used. And unlike the things sold on auction sites like eBay that are popular among the bargain-minded, it does not require that you engage in a bidding contest every time you want to make a purchase."
Government Sites Draw Web Traffic
"There's a huge range of things people are doing online now - car registration, voter registration, paying fines, enrolling in schools, filing taxes.
..."
Hush - do you want to store a secret?
"Called HushDrive, the service is delivered through online storage services firm Xdrive and provides a facility that enables users to securely upload, download, and access their files from anywhere, at anytime using Internet-ready
devices."
WEEKLY IN DEPTH...
BIOMETRICS
Generally, biometrics refers to the study of measurable biological characteristics.
In computer security, biometrics refers to authentication techniques that rely on measurable physical characteristics that can be automatically checked. Examples include computer analysis of fingerprints or speech.
Though the field is still in its infancy, many people believe that biometrics will play a critical role in future computers, and especially in electronic commerce.
Personal computers of the future might include a fingerprint scanner where you could place your index finger. (Actually, a few such programs are available today.)
The computer would analyze your fingerprint to determine who you are and, based on your identity, authorize you different levels of access to the data on a computer.
Access levels could include the ability to use credit card information to make electronic purchases.
Additionally,
in light of recent terrorist events, the concept of Biometric Identification
Cards on the national level has become a hot topic of conversation.
