Downstream

A transmission from a server to an end user.

A downstream transmission can be in the form of a signal being transmitted from a server (main computer) to a workstation across a network, such as a LAN (Local Area Network) in an office building, or it can be a web page being sent from an ISP (Internet Service Provider) to your computer.

A transmission from an end user to a server is referred to as "upstream".  When you send an email, the transmission of that email from your computer to your ISP mail server is called an upstream transmission.

READER FEEDBACK...

Q.   "Some guy created a web site featuring a "human clock" which consists of a different picture for every minute in the day.  Did you ever hear about this site?"

A.    I sure did.  It's called the "Human Clock".  Whenever you visit the site you see an actual photo of someone holding up sign with the current time.  The site has a different picture for every minute of the day.  And visitors are encouraged to participate by sending in their own photos.

Just follow the website link below and, when you get there, click on the clock... ... and you'll see the correct current time in the form of a photo, like this...

COMPUTER NEWS BRIEFS...

EBay Fees Going Up At Month's End
"For an item that sells for $150, a seller would pay eBay a transaction fee of $4.75 under the new rate plan, compared with $4.38 under the current one. For an item that sells for $1,500, a seller would pay $31.88 under the current rate structure and $35.63 under the new one."

Kazaa Suspends Downloads
"The company is halting all downloads in lieu of a decision of the Dutch court on its future, which is due on January 31."

The New Napster
"You'll notice a new file format dubbed NAP (.nap). NAP is a proprietary version of MP3 with a protective wrapping to insure that digital rights are preserved. NAPs are the files you download from the Discover page (searchable by genre, artists, and so on) and from other Napster subscribers. You won't be able to transfer or burn these NAP files to portable devices or CDs."

Software Program Tags Cheaters
"For the most part, the degree of similarity that this program is looking for — the commas are in the same place, the semicolons are in the same place, the spacing is the same, they've made the same mistakes — the only logical explanation."

Building A Better ID?
"Several states already require biometric information — thumbprints or fingerprints — from driver's license applicants. Under the AAMVA's proposal, biometric data might be required of every driver, everywhere."

WEEKLY IN DEPTH...

Upgrade to Windows XP?

If you're running Windows 98, 98SE, or Me, you're a good candidate for an upgrade, if nothing more than for XP's stability.

XP Home Edition is the OS that Windows Me should have been.

Expect to pay $99 to upgrade, and judging from the improvements you'll get, it's worth considering.

Still, if you haven't experienced crashes, incompatibilities with hardware devices, or other unexplainable snafus with your current OS, then you probably don't need to upgrade at this time.

Make sure that your hardware meets the minimum requirements that Microsoft outlines before you spend your hard earned money: 300 MHz CPU, 128MB RAM, and 1.5GB free hard disk space. Keep in mind that these are minimum hardware requirements, so a faster processor, more RAM, and extra disk space certainly won't hurt.

In brief, with Windows XP, it appears that Microsoft finally got it right.
