READER FEEDBACK...

Q.   "Did Washington really chop down a cherry tree?"

A.    "Father, I cannot tell a lie. I cut the tree." So says a young George when asked by his father if he used his hatchet to chop down a cherry tree.

The story has come to symbolize Washington's very character, but, in fact, the story is pure fiction. It was made up by a biographical author who wanted to "humanize" Washington who had been painted as "cold and colorless" in an earlier, poorly-selling biography.

Want another myth?  Remember the famous painting "Washington Crossing The Delaware"?

delxlg.gif (51136 bytes)

Well, in that painting the so-called "Betsy Ross" flag with the stars in a circle is seen.  But this design first came into existence some six months after Washington crossed the Delaware. The painter let his artistic license run wild in this work of art.

Happy Presidents' Day!

ON THE LIGHTER SIDE...

...A True Story -  President Carter was speaking at a business lunch in Tokyo, where he decided to open his speech with a brief joke.

He told the joke, then waited for the translator to announce the Japanese version. Even though the story was quite short, Carter was surprised by how quickly the interpreter was able to re-tell it.

Even more impressive was the reaction from the crowd. Carter thought the story was cute, but not outright hilarious, yet the crowd broke right up.

Later, when Carter asked how the joke had been told in Japanese, the translator responded, "I told them, 'President Carter has told a very funny joke. Please laugh now.'"

WEEKLY IN DEPTH...

Presidents' Day

Until the early 70's both February 12 and February 22 were observed as federal holidays to honor the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln (Feb. 12) and George Washington (Feb. 22).

In 1968, legislation (HR 15951) was enacted that affected several federal holidays. One of these was Washington's Birthday, the observation of which was shifted to the third Monday in February each year whether or not it fell on the 22nd.

Then, in 1971 President Richard Nixon proclaimed one single federal holiday, the Presidents' Day, to be observed on the third Monday of February, honoring all past presidents of the United States of America.

In fact, the Federal statute designates this day as Washington's Birthday.

President Nixon had issued a proclamation declaring the holiday as "Presidents' Day" in 1971 but he erroneously believed that a Presidential proclamation on the matter carried the same weight as an Executive Order.  It does not.

Therefore, since that change in 1971, the common term has been "President's Day" but the Federal holiday is actually "Washington's Birthday".

Confusing?  Let's review:

Abraham Lincoln's Birthday (Feb 12)
George Washington's Birthday (Feb 22)
George Washington's Revised Birthday (3rd Mon in Feb)
Presidents' Day (3rd Mon in Feb)

Got all that?  Good!  Happy Washington.. Lincoln... Presidents' Day.
