PDA

PDA, short for personal digital assistant, is a handheld computing device.

While most PDA's are used as a Personal Organizer for addresses and telephone numbers, some PDA's can function as a cellular phone, fax sender and web browser.

Unlike portable computers (laptops), most PDA devices use a stylus (pen device) rather than a keyboard for input.

PDAs are also called "palmtops" because they literally fit in your palm.

Compared to full-size computers, palmtops are severely limited, but they are very practical for functions such as phone books and calendars.

COMPUTER NEWS BRIEFS...

Gates Tops Forbes Rich List
"While Microsoft founder Bill Gates still is the richest guy on the planet, the fortunes of several high-tech titans have fallen below the billion-dollar mark."

Chat Room Rants Protected
"A Los Angeles judge dismissed a lawsuit last Friday that sought to collect damages from "John Does" who criticized the company anonymously on Internet message boards. Privacy advocates say the decision sets an important precedent in the fight to protect anonymous speech online."

Microsoft Steps Up Anti-AOL Campaign
"As with previous Microsoft "switcher" campaigns, the new effort comes just weeks after an unpopular rate hike by America Online.  In January, AOL raised rates for current users of its "Bring Your Own Access" plan -- after promising not to do so four months earlier. The plan, rates for which grew from $9.95 to $14.95, affected users of its AOL service who connected via a local ISP."

They Want Their ID Chips Now
"The Jacobs family could become the first family in the world to be implanted with microchips that contain their personal information."

Label To Warn Of Copy Blocking On Music CDs
"Music City Records of Nashville agreed to include a warning on its packaging that owners cannot copy "Charley Pride -- A Tribute to Jim Reeves" into computer MP3 files. Also, the label agreed to ensure it will not require or store personal identifying information like e-mail and IP addresses when album owners access a downloadable version from the Internet."

WEEKLY IN DEPTH...

Printing a Web Page

Sometimes, when printing out a web page, the right side of the page gets cut off by a few characters or a few words.

If this happens to you, the first thing to try is to look for a "PRINTER FRIENDLY" link or a "PRINT THIS PAGE" link.  Your page should then print properly.

If such a link does not exist, you can solve the problem by printing out the page in "LANDSCAPE" mode.

After choosing to print the page, go into "printer setup" and change the page orientation from "portrait" to "landscape".

This will insure that you won't lose words or characters when the page prints.
