UNDO To return to a previous state by "undoing" the effects of one or more commands. The undo command is a valuable feature supported by many software products. It lets you try unknown commands with less risk, because you can always return to the previous state. Many programs allow you to undo an unlimited number of commands. Each time you press the undo key, the previous command is undone. You can roll back an entire editing session this way. Some programs impose a limit of allowing you undo only your last action.

Q. "I enjoyed the St. Paddy's Day Greeting that you sent to your subscribers. How did you make the water move?"
A. The effect to which you refer is called the "LAKE JAVA APPLET". The WTC photo at the top of this page is another example of this technique.
I use a special program that allows me to create this effect of moving water.
The original photo is cropped at the waterline, inverted (upsidedown) to create a reflection and then a Lake Applet is applied to the reflection to simulate moving water.
If you don't have a website on which to display your creation, you can use it as "living wallpaper" on your desktop or as a screensaver.
Cool, huh?
Until next week, this is your computer guy, changing the world one computer user at a time.

ON THE LIGHTER SIDE... `
"...I phoned the zoo but the lion was busy."
AOL Replaces IE With Netscape
"Switching to
Netscape has proved an enormous task for the media giant. Not only must AOL ensure compatibility with its own software that is heavily based on HTML-derived forms, but it also must be sure customers will have a similar browsing experience using the new engine - or face a multitude of support
complaints."
An Internet-Age Copyright
Ruling
"The Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit covering California ruled that an image search engine website that copied and displayed thumbnail images in response to a user's query was not a copyright infringement but rather a (non-infringing) "fair use" allowed under copyright
law."
Schools Declare File-Swapping Truce
"Students are essentially our customers, and we need to try to make them
happy. Music and movies are out there to download, so rather than take a hard-and-fast line to block it...we decided it would be best to let it continue, but to limit it down until such a time it does become
illegal."
Chained
Melodies
"When Brian Cianessi
put the CD in his computer and fired up AudioGrabber, a software program that converts CD tracks into MP3s, the CD locked up the program. But after rebooting his computer, he discovered that the protection was easy to
thwart."
DSL Promises Lifestyle Improvements... Someday
"The trip to the doctor's office could be the exception one day. A wearable sensor or a digital camera may provide the physician all that's needed to get you a diagnosis online.
Likewise, programming your home VCR from the office could become commonplace. So could turning up the heat remotely as you drive home.
Such are the promises of high-speed Internet access: Improvements in education, health care, entertainment and much
more."
WEEKLY IN DEPTH...
UPS
Most folks buy a UPS that will provide about five minutes of juice after the power goes out. These consumer-level UPSes are like a battery in a box.
Only certain people need a UPS.
I don't have one, because the power rarely goes out where I live and even if it does I don't care. I save my work often and don't really think that an improper shutdown hurts my PC all that much.
Farmer John, on the other hand, with the erratic power he gets in Troy, South Carolina, does need one. He has no critical business running on the computer and doesn't leave the machine unattended. His power outages are very short, he just wants to end the annoyance of getting booted offline and having his computer shut down several times per storm.
Priced at about $100, you might want to consider a UPS if you have an erratic power environment.
