Kistka

A traditional "kistka" is a small copper funnel that is attached with thin wire to a small wooden handle.  It is used to hold melted beeswax.

A kistka is used to write (draw) with wax on an egg.

The egg is then dipped in colored dye. The process of drawing and dipping is repeated several times.

Finally, the wax is removed by melting and a multicolored easter egg is born.

These beautifully decorated Ukrainian easter eggs are called "pysanky".

See the "Weekly In Depth" section below to learn how to make these wonderful works of art.

READER FEEDBACK...

Q.   "I can't wait to see how Bianca will appear for Easter.  Are you going to put an Easter Bonnet on her?"

A.   Nope.  She says she's getting tired of the hats.  She wanted something more dignified.

So, here's Bianca's (and my) Easter Greeting to all of you...

Until next week, this is  your computer guy, changing the world one computer user at a time.

COMPUTER NEWS BRIEFS...

Jesus Rises From Dead

"WorldNews (Sunday) - Scores of people could be seen today sharing the news of the most important event in human history.

Jesus Christ had been crucified on Friday. His dead body had been taken and placed in a cave cut into the mountainside. It was sealed with a large rock and guarded.

On Sunday morning, the women who came to visit discovered that the rock was removed and that the body was no longer there. Jesus had risen from the dead just as He said He would.

The excitement that exists is growing by the hour as the news is spread. The words echo from one person to another... "Jesus is alive! He has risen from the dead!"

WEEKLY IN DEPTH...

PYSANKY

Pysanky (pronounced pee-sahn-key), are Ukrainian Easter Eggs... a single egg is a pysanka.

They are NOT painted. They are dyed in a wax-resist process.  Simply explained, wax lines and artwork is applied to the egg using a small tool called a kistka so that, wherever the wax is, the egg won't take on colored dye in those spots when the egg is dipped.  When all the wax is removed we have a beautifully colored egg.

The special materials that you'll need are:
1.  A Kistka (the "stylus" or "pen" used for applying the wax)
2.  Bees Wax (you'll draw with the melted wax)
3.  Special Dyes (to dip the egg for coloring)
4.  A Pencil (to sketch your design lines)
5.  Candles (to heat the wax in the kistka)
6.  Spoons (to dip the eggs into coloring)
7.  Paper Towels (to dry the egg)

Remember, we're gonna...

1.  Sketch our design with a pencil
2.  Draw some lines with melted wax using our kistka pen
3.  Dip our egg into a light color dye (like yellow)
4.  Draw more lines with melted wax
5.  Dip our egg into a darker color dye
6.  Draw more designs with melted wax
7.  Dip our egg into an even darker color dye
8.  Melt and wipe off all of the wax from our egg
9.  Admire our beautiful egg with multicolored designs

Get the idea?  Each time we draw lines with the wax we are protecting the coloring of those areas.  As we continue to draw and dip we are creating lines (designs) of various colors.  We finally melt off all of the wax and we have a beautiful egg with multicolored lines.

So get your supplies (by mail at SURMA in Manhattan) and let's get started...

   1.  Affix a half inch rubber band around an uncooked egg and use a pencil to draw your basic design on the egg.  Then remove the rubber band.

   2.  Fill the stylus (kistka) with beeswax, hold it over the candle to melt the wax and get ready to draw (write) on the egg.

   3.  Draw your lines and designs on the egg.  You'll be drawing & dipping, drawing & dipping, etc.  Each time you draw, you'll be protecting the current egg color.  Example:  if the egg is currently yellow and you draw a cross, when you dip the egg into the red color dye your cross will be protected from the red and will be a bright yellow when you eventually remove all of the wax.

   4.  Dip the egg into progressively darker dyes.  Each time, after the egg dries, draw the lines that will appear in the last color dipped.

   5.  After dipping into the final color, melt the wax over a candle flame, one section at a time, wiping the melted wax with a soft tissue.

   6.  With the wax removed, your own colorful masterpiece emerges, ready for display.

And you don't have to limit this fine hobby to Easter.

Enjoy and...
